The Flying Kiwi

“Okay, so how come that kiwi was viewed over 23 million times?”

I won’t deny the fact that it was indeed a hilarious but moving video. This one seems to approach the viewers in an animated and humorous manner but I think it is also a kind of allegory. It has a funny plot enhanced by a creative animation or should I say it the other way around?

Every story usually begins with the cliché “Once upon a time” but allow me to start my own essay the way I want it. Here I go.

And so the kiwi suddenly jumped from the cliff without any clear reasons which I interpret to be very irrational but it has obviously its own reasons to do such an action. That tiny creature, even though it seems to be dumb depicts courage. Dumbness because it nailed the roots of the tree to prevent it from falling. On the other hand, it also showed courage because it took risk in going down the slope just to nail the roots. What that kiwi did can be compared to those people who tend to take great risks in some certain events in their lives to do something which is actually worthless.

As far as I’ve read in the children’s encyclopedia, a kiwi is a bird found in New Zealand which is closely related to the emu and ostrich and obviously, it cannot fly. But the kiwi in the video looks like a chick and it also acts like one. Because we have chickens at home, I have observed that the chicks are helpless without the mother hen. They would often be picked on by other chickens and they often wander around, get lost and chirp endlessly until the hen finds them. I have also watched a video in youtube entitled “very funny wherein the penguin kicked one of the chicks into the water because they make very annoying sounds. In the end, the chicks that were left became silent when a shark ate their companion.

But despite the fact that the only character in the video seems helpless, it also shows some actions which can remind us that miracles do happen. Remember when the kiwi wearing the pilot’s costume jumped off from the cliff? As it was falling, it shed its tears and then tiny structures grew from its body which I consider to be its wings because of the flapping movement. We sometimes tend to wish for certain miracles to happen in our lives but we are not even ready to take risk or sacrifice something in return. I have learned through this video that just like the kiwi, we human beings are helpless in nature but when certain situations require us to take risk, we must not hesitate because it is during those times that a lot of miracles take place.
